About the artwork

Born in Brittany and professing a profound admiration for British photographer Michael Kenna, in his own way, Jules Valentin explores a landscape in which the picturesque tends to be effaced. Like his mentor, the universal power of nature and the elements are revealed before his lens. Here, he continues his exploration by photographing urban landscapes. It took 17 years work in Rochefort to identically reconstruct the ship L'Hermione that took the Marquis de Lafayette to meet General Washington. This frigate is 66 m long and 11.5 m wide.

The artist

Passionate about the photographic medium since 2000, Jules Valentin strives to create images as he undertakes his marine explorations. The photographer does not hesitate to head offshore and play on stability/instability. Through his personal projects, he orders and assembles his chosen locations in shots using rare, dark, and silvery colours. The sight of them evokes a kind of fresh coastal breeze, the movement of the sea, or a shift or freezing of time. Professing a profound admiration for British photographer Michael Kenna, he explores a landscape in which the picturesque tends to be effaced. Like his mentor, he reveals through his lens the universal power of nature and the elements: the movements of the stars over a calm surface, or a tormented ocean, the power of the wind pushing the clouds or unleashing mighty waves.  ... RUSLAN BOLGOV

Ruslan Bolgov was born in 1974 in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. His earliest photographs were taken as a teenager, but he didn’t take the experience very far at the time. It wasn’t until the end of his studies in economics and finance that he seriously app...

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
