About the artwork

Attracted by the vast untouched plains and the most well-preserved regions of the world, Nolwenn Hadet fell under the spell of the Arctic, north of Spitzberg. The photographer brings a poetic and sensitive gaze to bear on this environment, which remains a perpetual source of inspiration. While producing such pictures is extremely dangerous, they are full of gentle serenity, revealing a heightened and enchanting world. Accompanied by a guide, an expert in the polar seas, and sometimes preparing her expeditions two years in advance, she works in the safest conditions in order to approach the bears. It is also important that she takes into account the desirable periods for viewing them, in summer in Spitzberg, between September and October in the north of Alaska and in February to spot the cubs as they leave their dens. An ice pick enables her to navigate comfortably through the ice floes. Nolwenn Hadet offers us a tender, playful, and friendly view of polar bears, the primary victims of the melting of the ice due to climate change and thus a species undergoing a very real threat of extinction.
