About the artwork

With the series The Great Indoors, the American photographer produces dazzling representations of highly symbolic historic buildings entirely dedicated to art and culture. Taken on 18 July 2015 in the sumptuous Palais Garnier, the image At Night at the Opera presents the National Opera of Paris outside of its performance times. The empty seats and depth of field reinforce the solemnity of the venue. ?When I admire these interiors, I look beyond art and perfect symmetry ? I see devoted artisans and architects for whom creating these places of communion had become their life?s work.? He adds: ?One of the things I wanted to do with this series was to render each image as timeless as possible. I wanted to remove the clues, and that meant obtaining special authorisation to photograph the empty space, before or after public opening hours. Clothing or hairstyles often indicate the time of shooting, so the fact of photographing without visitors was an important factor in achieving this timeless touch.?
