MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DELIVERY

The artist

A graphic designer aged 35, Czech artist Lukas Holas is interested in wildlife photography. He has been very successful with the press, particularly through the publication of his majestic series of animal portraits. Unable to travel the world with his camera, he decided to go directly to zoos in search of his subjects. By using highly contrasted black and white, the artist deliberately highlights the character traits of lions, tigers, leopards, or zebras, and lends them a kind of dignity by detracting from the concrete walls and fences of their cages. The intensity of their gazes, and the majesty of their postures are magnified by a surprising play of light and shade. The series thus bears witness to the photographer?s exceptional experience in digital creation techniques, acquired during his university studies in the Czech Republic.  ... See more See less

LUKAS HOLAS

About the artwork

Although they are produced outside of their natural environment, Lukas Holas?s majestic wildlife portraits capture the essence of each creature through the fences of the zoo. In this collection of contrasted images in black and white, the Czech photographer manages to transcend time and space. He succeeds in extracting the wild and exotic animal from its cage, highlighting its bestiality in the purest possible form. Photographed in close-up, against a black background and sophisticated lighting, Lukas Holas?s imposing shots are different from traditional wildlife photography through their close affinity to the long tradition of photographic portraiture. Through simplified lighting, the spectator can hone in on the essential elements without the colour detracting from them, and thus discovers these animals from a new perspective. From a touching lion, resembling a soft toy, to one letting out a full-throated roar, we can only marvel at this beautiful testimony to the beauty and power of suspended nature.
