The artist

Born in Segovia, Spain, Pototo Diez abandoned his studies in biology in 1985 to devote himself to photography, which he has practised since childhood. From 1987 to 2000, he was a cameraman for Spanish public television (TVE), for which he was also director of photography on a dozen documentary productions. In 1994, he founded Artec Publishing and has published over fifty books on art and nature. Pototo Diez turned to more personal work from 2010 onwards, extending his activity into the field of fashion. After working for several years with big name Spanish designers, in 2014 he directed Facebackproject: The Hidden Face of Fashion, his first documentary behind the scenes at fashion shows. Pototo Diez’s photos have been exhibited in his native country, in Segovia, Ibiza, and Madrid, and soon conquered international galleries.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

This documentary photograph was taken on 18 September 2011 during Madrid Fashion Week. It reflects a patient moment, the last moment for the models before heading out onto the catwalk surrounded by a crowd of specialised journalists, photographers, and influential personalities. It is an image that depicts the wings of fashion shows without artifice, showing what usually goes unseen under the spotlights. In Wigs, the young women, wearing blond wigs as sleek as their slender bodies, appear as impassive sphinxes, full of fear and human flaws. Fascinated by the photographic work of American Bruce Weber whose black-and-white photographs exalt male beauty, Pototo Diez aims to impress the spectator through subtle, stolen moments and, at the same time, defend these women who are often criticised and envied.
