Benoît Rajau discovered photography as a teenager when, one summer, his father gave him a Konica camera and two lenses—a 24 mm and a 135 mm. With it, he learned the essentials: the subtle relationship between ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. When school started again, the camera naturally found its way into his backpack. Luckily, his school had a photography club. He discovered the black-and-white darkroom and tasted the total freedom of photography, with a predilection for demonstrations where he watched the professionals with envy. After graduating from high school, a decisive encounter changed the course of his life: on his return from a trip to Poland, he met Bruno Barbey, who invited him to become his assistant at the Magnum agency. Today, although his style has evolved, one common thread remains: his attention to composition, the cornerstone of his work.
