About the artwork

What does it matter that we take different roads, so long as we reach the same goal? Mahatma Gandhi Fishing on stilts or piles is an ancient tradition practised by a number of fishing families on the Sri Lankan coast. The fishermen wait patiently on their stilts, holding a line with a hook and making constant movements in the water in order to attract the fish.

The artist

Pascal Mannaerts was born in Brussels in 1978. He has been interested in travel and discovering new horizons since childhood and began his studies in law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, which led him to work with refugees in Belgium. An artist from a very young age, it was on his first backpacker trips as a student that he truly discovered photography, which testified to the encounters and exchanges he experienced along the way. It served as a way for him to share his discoveries and immortalise them. In the year 2000, he went to India for the first time, with his first reflex camera. India triggered something inside him, and he was to return there again and again. After his studies, he embarked on his first year-long journey, through India and Southeast Asia. An inveterate backpacker, for over 15 years, he is a regular globetrotter, bringing back powerful images that people can identify with. His many journeys have also led him to Asia, Africa and Latin America, to the Maghreb and the Middle East. As a self-taught photographer, he mainly learned photography on the road, through his curiosity and taste for originality and spontaneity. His work reflects this desire for communion, a certain curiosity for life, an appetite for encounters and the magic binding it all together of his photos have been published by Géo, Lonely Planet, the Guide du Routard, the Maison des Indes and in several travel magazines in Europe.  ... Ruslan Bolgov was born in 1974 in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. His earliest photographs were taken as a teenager, but he didn’t take the experience very far at the time. It wasn’t until the end of his studies in economics and finance that he seriously app...

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
