With Foxy Lady, a series conceived in the 1980s in collaboration with stylist and producer Ypsitylla von Nazareth, Cheyco Leidmann invented an immediately recognizable visual language: hyperreal colors that seem to want to tear themselves off the image, surrealist compositions, and a solar, decadent eroticism that draws as much from fashion as from contemporary art. It feels as though someone had cranked the world's saturation up to maximum, then decided to place women, cars, and swimming pools within it. The impact is immediate. Foxy Lady features in Vogue Paris's selection of cult books from the past five decades; John Taylor of Duran Duran, said that it was this work that inspired the music video for Rio, which itself also went on to become iconic. Seven worldwide editions later, the book remains a reference, and Cheyco Leidmann a pioneer whom the New York Art Directors Club has honored with its Gold Award. Six other monographs followed. Trained in cinema, he has built a body of work that moves between fashion photography, advertising, and fine art, never agreeing to be confined to a single register. His style, today, is widely imitated and rarely equaled.
