The artist

Born in 1960 in Algiers, Jeff Cabella is a self-taught photographer, although his parents introduced him to photography at a tender age. At 15, he devoted all of his savings to the purchase of his first reflex camera and embarked on a series of artistic experiments at the photo club he had joined. Ever since, his passion for images has never left him. Now based in Paris, Jeff Cabella documents his travels in colour and focuses on the essence of places, a situation, or an event that crops up along the way. He also practises street photography in black and white, capturing slices of life in an almost instinctive way, as he travels and as chance encounters occur around him. While they seem very different, his two artistic practices are linked by his considerable interest in his fellow humans.  ... See more See less

JEFF CABELLA

About the artwork

Itinerant photographer Jeff Cabella is constantly globetrotting, documenting his many journeys and bringing back images in striking colours. Entitled Red Pirogue, this image comes from a series undertaken in Sri Lanka in 2011. Jeff Cabella wished to convey the impressions and highlights he?d experienced on this expedition. The line of the horizon determines the centre of the photograph. It defines a perfect balance between the stretch of water covered in water lilies and the cloudy sky above it. The natural elements are reflected in the water, which varies from blue to green. A red pirogue bearing two fishermen comes to disturb the surrounding harmony and serenity, reminding us of the role of humankind amid the immensity of nature.
