About the artwork

This black-and-white photograph documents the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the three most prestigious courses in the world along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. A key event of each Formula 1 season, it is held in Monte Carlo in the principality of Monaco, on an urban circuit built in 1929 by Anthony Noghes, the son of the president of the Monaco Automobile Club. William Grover-Williams won the inaugural race on 14 April 1929, at the wheel of a Bugatti. In this photograph, British driver Graham Hill was the amazing winner of the Grand Prix on 26 May 1963, taking the victory with a record time of 2 hrs 41 mins 49 secs, at the wheel of his BRM P57.
