Gwenn Dubourthoumieu discovered photography while working in Africa for humanitarian NGOs. In 2010, he decided to make it his career and moved to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he began a long-term documentary project on social issues and human rights, while also covering current events as a photographer for Agence France-Presse. Since 2012, he has lived and worked in Paris as a freelance photographer, using his lens to examine inequalities and power dynamics—in France and elsewhere—without ever completely leaving the DRC, where he has been conducting in-depth work for more than fifteen years. His series on the social consequences of copper and cobalt mining in the southeastern part of the country was added to the permanent collections of the Library of Congress in the United States in 2013. For the past two years, he has continued this work alongside writer and traveler Guillaume Jan, with whom he has launched a series of expeditions into the Congolese forest, now considered the world’s largest terrestrial carbon sink. In May 2024, her photographic investigation into the lifestyles of Paris’s upper class was published as a book, *Entre-soi, le séparatisme des riches* (Closed Circles: The Separatism of the Rich), co-authored with sociologist Monique Pinçon-Charlot. Gwenn Dubourthoumieu joined the Argos collective in March 2025.
