Fleeting light

Alexandra Jansen is a self-taught American photographer who has been based in Australia for a decade. She works exclusively with natural light using a vintage 35mm film camera, and has mastered a rare technique: double exposure created directly in-camera, without any post-production. Each image is therefore unique, as a double exposure cannot be identically reproduced. Her photographic practice was born during the Covid pandemic, amidst a difficult period of medical treatment and isolation. Faced with a suddenly shrunken world, she turned to photography as a space of freedom and rediscovered joy. "The sunlight interacts with the film and reveals a mirage of nostalgic leisure," she says. This is how her Analogue Mixtapes collection came to be somewhere between the Studio 54 era and a Beach Boys song, both melancholic and sun-drenched. Today, Alexandra Jansen partners with fine art studios in Paris, London, New York, and Sydney, with works held in private collections around the world. A portion of every sale she makes is donated to ovarian cancer research.
