About the artwork

While the photographer’s main subjects are inspired by buildings in ruins, these are not however always ruins left by their inhabitants. They hark back to the golden age of a bygone era and most symbolise a heritage that is doomed to disappear. Aurélien Villette has travelled the world since 2008 in search of “the spirit of place” in each of the structures that he photographs. Since then, he has set foot in around thirty countries, seeking out societies and stories that have fashioned his vision of the world. What he highlights in his landscapes is this personal view of our civilisation and its changes through architectural constructions that have come and gone from one era to the next. Venice, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, is now threatened by rising seawater and the sinking and erosion of the buildings into the lagoon. Through the Venetian Erosions series, Aurélien Villette captures the fragile beauty of this floating city, gradually drowning beneath the waves.
