About the artwork

German artist Bernhard Hartmann owes his recent success to his breathtaking representations of historic buildings that are highly symbolic and entirely dedicated to art and culture. On his travels, he also ponders the meaning and heritage value applied to old abandoned buildings, as in his series on Havana, taken between 2010 and 2014. The ?Villa Alonso? is a notable site from the heyday of the Cuban city prior to the revolution led by Fidel Castro. Due to lack of funds, the magnificent buildings have not been able to be maintained by their owners and have fallen into disrepair. The representation of this Art Deco bourgeois interior is thus part of this sad legacy. Fifty years later, Bernhard Hartmann offers us a poetic testimony, in which the fading of colours into yellowing hues, and disintegrating walls and ceilings, undeniably reveal the weight of the years. These residences still have families living in them, in extreme poverty.
