About the artwork

An eternal fan of Coney Island, photographer Mina Teslaru never tires of playing with light and colour to transform this famous Brooklyn neighbourhood into dreamlike landscapes. Reaching the peak of its popularity in the early 20th century, and starting its decline after World War II, this former island that is now a peninsula has been revitalised with the opening of a number of amusement parks. The "new Luna Park" in particular, which opened its doors in 2010 and whose mysterious charm Mina Teslaru has persisted in capturing for the past decade. She manages to reveal the timeless, magical quality of the fairground rides through overexposure and the use of old-fashioned colours. The sea is intensified through her lens; the golden sand shines and the crowds amass like small colourful dots. An air of happiness very naturally pervades her images, surrounding the melancholy that governs them.
