About the artwork

This stretch of beach near the town of Vik on the south coast of Iceland is a place of wild and dramatic beauty. Waves of the Atlantic Ocean meet the coast and the black sand beach, often with tremendous force. At any time of the year and in any light, this is a place of great beauty that will remind people that nature always prevails in Iceland. My favourite weather is exactly the same as on this motif: a dense coastal fog, which wraps the scenery in a monochrome light and sometimes only briefly highlights rocks, birds and waves from the fog. There's something threatening, but at the same time calming about it, especially when you're the only one on the beach, which is possible in the off-season.

The artist

Jan Erik Waider is a visual artist and fine art photographer based in Hamburg. His focus is atmospheric and abstract landscape photography of the distant North: Norway, Iceland, Greenland and beyond. Jan’s desire to explore remote and rarely seen places provides unique opportunities to shoot magnificent vistas and landscapes. His meticulous and well-planned approach to his fine art photography immerses him in his surroundings. He was always drawn to the North. Exploring the cold, raw beauty of its landscapes became a form of meditation for him, and photography a way to preserve those fleeting memories. These quiet mesmerizing moments of contemplation and reflection are what inspire Jan the most. These are the moments where he feels connected and “at home.” His photography is a way of preserving these fleeting memories. Jan’s work should be seen as a visual journal. His photography gives us insight into his mind and imagination.  ... See more See less

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
