The artist

The photographs by Italian Oliviero Toscan continue to spark debates and polemics. Born in 1942, he is the son of the first photojournalist of the Milanese daily paper Corriere Della Sera. After graduating in Zurich in 1965, he worked with prestigious luxury brands and his shots featured in illustrious international publications (Elle, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Uomo Vogue). His collaboration with United Colors of Benneton from 1982 to 2000 made him an internationally renowned artist. It would be impossible to recall the nineties without alluding to his controversial communication campaigns, in which the clothing was entirely eclipsed by political messages. Oliviero Toscanis’ work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, the Triennale di Milano, and the modern art museums of Mexico City, Helsinki, Rome, Lausanne, Frankfurt and San Paolo. The obtention of four Golden Lions at the Cannes Film Festival did not wane his determination to be firmly anchored in the register of provocation.  ... See more See less

OLIVIERO TOSCANI

About the artwork

Oliviero Toscani took this famous black-and-white portrait of Andy Warhol in 1974. A great chronicler of the times, and a forerunner of the pop art movement, the renowned artist always carries a Polaroid camera with him. Thanks to that dedication, he was able to amass a significant collection of snapshots showing his friends, lovers, patrons, celebrities, actors, and fashion aficionadas like himself. ?Each photo is here to remind me where I was at a given time. That is why I take photos. It?s a kind of visual diary,? he said in the sixties and seventies.
