Der Künstler

Laurent Dequick is a professional architect in his forties. His photographic work has been influenced by architecture, since it is primarily focused on ideas surrounding the contemporary city and more specifically, urban sprawl. The photographer’s message is to accurately convey the impression of freneticism stemming from population density and activity in urban zones: “As you walk down the street, the lights, noises, traffic, hustle and bustle, and mix of smells are so striking that no single shot could capture all of it. So do we have to make choices? I don’t think so and I don’t want to.” To convey in images this “congestion” of urban life, Laurent Dequick does not hesitate to juxtapose, superimpose, or imbricate his shots. He fits together photographs representing architectural complexes, highways, and people, all with the same intensity. He condenses the images like the city condenses the sum of the lives of all of its inhabitants. His style is reminiscent of cubism in its rendering that verges on abstraction in its representation of constant motion.  ... Mehr sehen Weniger sehen

I am an unconditional lover of Venice. It is a city rooted in the past; it has changed very little in three centuries, owing to its very structure.

LAURENT DEQUICK

Rund ums Werk

Laurent Dequick once again moves away from the traditional representation that we have of the landscapes around us in order to present a highly poetic vision that borrows from the Cubist movement. On his numerous escapades all over the world, he has captured all kinds of monuments, venues, and sites that are the incontestable witnesses of history and of the radiating influence of the countries that he travels through. This photograph belongs to the series that he dedicated to the United States, revealing a richly diverse country-continent. The urban freneticism and hyperactivity that he likes to represent are expressed by a condensation of shooting angles, which draw the spectator's eye. Through this interplay of superpositions, Laurent Dequick notably evokes Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase in which the expressiveness of the lines reveals the movement within the painting.
