Der Künstler

Against a backdrop of filmmaking, which he practised for a time, Qingjian Meng began his artistic career in 2010. Alongside expert fashion photographers, he produced shots designed for art galleries and international publications. He subsequently became the director of a New York photography studio, specialising in various shooting techniques, to the point of mastering each camera down to its slightest functions. The Californian artist has now rediscovered his roots and works from his base in Los Angeles, devoting his time to the production of fashion photographs and portraits. Inspired by the paintings of great masters or American representations by photographer Salomon Butcher, Qingjian Meng stages 19th century men and women with irony, high-tech objects as popular as a videogame joystick, a Bluetooth earpiece, or even a drone.  ... Rund ums Werk

Inspired by masterpieces, the series “Gold Rush” by Californian artist Qingjian Meng sows confusion between time periods. It is difficult for the spectator to differentiate between painting and photography in this savvy combination of purity and insolence. The models presented seem to belong to the 19th century, but they are endowed with the latest high-tech accessories. Through this gesture, the photographer affirms his desire to spark a dialogue between generations, asking: who is really ahead of their time?

DAMIEN DUFRESNE

As Damien Dufresne says himself: "I let my hands do the talking". His approach is totally new in that it's at the crossroads of makeup, body art, artistic direction and photography. The resulting complexity, technicality and beauty are impressive. Damien Dufresne, a make-up arti...
