The artist

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at the Université de Paris La Sorbonne, the Peruvian photographer has won numerous awards throughout his prolific career, largely due to his captivating wildlife portraits. Born in Lima, he has travelled to the heart of the Amazonian wilderness since the age of ten and specialised in landscape photography from the 1980s onwards. Subjects of fascination that are very present in his work, the wild animals that he photographs in natural reserves have earned him multiple awards, such as the Sony World Photography Awards, the Prix de la Photo (PX3), the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA), National Geographic Photographer of the Month, and International Photography Awards (IPA).  ... About the artwork

By immortalising wild animals in their natural habitat and then working on the lighting in postproduction to display them against a neutral backdrop, Pedro Jarque Krebs aims to help break down the barrier that we have built up over the centuries concerning our relationship with the animal kingdom. The darkness of the backdrop and the play of light and shade allow the photographer to create the atmosphere necessary to take an emotional approach to them. In Black Friday, the pink flamingos appear to be striking a pose, whereas they have been photographed in the wild. It has been suggested that our contemplation of animals has always represented a means of reflecting on the origins of humanity, as a reflection of ourselves. This is part of the Western idea that affirms that, during our evolution, the human species became isolated from the natural realm that defines animals and their behaviour. Through his remarkable series of portraits, photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs strives to reconstruct our view of these wild species by restoring some of the dignity that has been usurped from them.
