Loïc Zhao was born in China and spent his childhood there before leaving to work in South Korea as a fashion designer. Now living in Paris, he works as an artistic director for various brands. When he arrived in the capital, he started out as a professional photographer and developed projects with fashion brands but also personal projects. A fashion designer, Loïc Zhao nevertheless brings a distanciated or even ironic view of his milieu and the ‘progress’ of the world to bear through his photos. His models, men or women, wear heavy make-up and resemble dolls or wax figures. “I love to offer viewers a representation of people as objects,” explains the artist. “It’s always this feeling that guides me when I take photos.” Loïc Zhao does not however seek to deliver a particular message, he simply wishes, through photography, to express and share his emotions.
