The artist

Living in Gothenburg, Sweden, photographers Marco Grizelj and Kristian Krän have collaborated since 1996 under the name AORTA. Alongside their personal artistic practice, both have worked for major companies such as Harvey Nichols, IKEA, Panasonic, Tuborg, Absolut Vodka, American Movie Channel, and have produced fashion photographs for famous magazines such as Schön Magazine or 125 Magazine. After graduating from the photography school of the University of Gothenburg, they decided to combine their talents and make their shared vision of photography a reality. They now create very powerful images that aim to reveal an imaginary world that is both surrealistic and playful. Drawing their sources of inspiration from illustrations or cinema, they assemble and associate different fragments of composed images to create a partially documentary world. An exhibition was held in their honour in London in 2014, the same year that they received the prize for the Moscow photography competition in the fashion photography category.  ... About the artwork

This photograph comes from the ?Playspace? series by AORTA. Both the subject and the composition recall certain graphic engravings from the 18th century. A young woman appears wearing an extravagant costume, photographed in a decor with incongruous objects and thick curtains, suggesting a certain aristocratic mannerism. The model?s gestures as well as the presence of elements of broken crockery provide a window onto a kind of haughty negligence and decadence in the society around her, similar to that of life at the royal court prior to the French Revolution.
