About the artwork

Ellorâ is an Indian village, formerly known under the name of Elapurâ, located 30 km from the city of Aurangâbâd in the state of Maharashtra famous for its troglodyte architecture, monasteries and Buddhist temples. These structures were excavated from a vertical face in the hills of Charanandri. There are 34 of them, of which 12 are Buddhist, 17 Hindu, and 5 Jain. The coexistence of these structures demonstrates the religious tolerance that has always been present in India. In 1983, the Ellorâ site was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The artist

Wolfgang Weinhardt is a German photographer. His taste for Indian culture has led him to travel widely in Asia and Oceania: through his photographs, Wolfgang wishes to share and revive the rich diversity of Asian culture. His goal is to enrich cultural dialogue and avert a certain loss of identification – with visually spectacular results. He also pays a lot of attention to dramatic landscapes, such as full moons, solstice, or climate variations.  ... See more See less
