His minimalistic style underlines the contrasts and pushes them to their limits. The result is very stylised and confers dramatic intensity to the series. The title of the series, Dark Zoo, specifies where the photographs were taken. While it is only suggested, the mission of conservation of animal species assigned to zoological parks is also one of the subjects of representation. The formal ideological message concerning environmental aspects is nonetheless contradicted by original framing. Nicolas Evariste is a photographer from the Granville region, in the English Channel, and his first forays into photography were in 2006. From the outset, he favoured black and white and the square format. He thus places a lot of importance on aesthetic research and minimalism. He considers photography as a means of expression and escapism. He does not necessarily confront his images with reality, but shares a personal and artistic vision of the world we live in.
