Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton was both a portrait and fashion photographer, a cinema set designer and a costume designer for the cinema and theatre. His career took off in 1926 with an exhibition of his photographs in London. It led to him signing a contract with Vogue in 1931. He worked for the magazine until the 1950s. He died in 1980 having gained recognition in his lifetime by notably being exhibited twice at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
