Sull'opera

Sourcing her inspiration in the painting of the old masters of the 17th century, such as Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, Mathilde Oscar composes her photographs like a painter constructs a painting. Through the precise study of compositions and settings, she appropriates the codes of representation of yesteryear. She nonetheless distinguishes her work through a highly contemporary approach, by integrating staged elements from everyday life into her photographs that conspicuously disrupt our reading of them. Taken from the Renaissance 2.0 series, the image Milkmaid 2.0 refers to Vermeer?s 1658 masterpiece The Milkmaid, which characterises the golden age of Dutch painting and is exhibited today at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This oil painting was also used in 1973 by a famous French plain yoghurt brand in glass containers marketed by Nestl

L'artista

Following her studies in art history to which she constantly refers, the dreamlike world of young photographer Mathilde Oscar revolves around the myths, legends, and fairytales of our childhood, which she revisits in a modern-day context. Initially a painter, which she experimented with throughout her youth, it seems only natural that her portraits are more pictorial than photographic. Differentiating her style from that of reportage photography, Mathilde Oscar leaves very little room for chance and chooses to create her worlds from scratch, as though she were painting a genre scene while inventing a story for each new composition and producing all of the elements that constitute it. Decors, accessories, costumes, make-up and hairstyles are thought out and customised by the artist according to the needs of each image. A real one-woman-band, she is not about to give up, given the success of her exhibitions in France since her début in 2015, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Vallauris, Mouans-Sartoux, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Nice, Mougins, Grasse, and Menton.  ...
