Sull'opera

In Alexander Schönberg’s black-and-white photographs, we find a whole vocabulary of urban melancholy: unique modernist and brutalist architecture, imprecise horizons, blurred by clouds of mist, and many other grey areas that invade the picture plane. Fascinated by his native city, Alexander Schönberg never tires of capturing Hamburg and documenting the bridges that overlook it. There are around 2 500 of them, more than the cities of London, Amsterdam, and Venice combined. Taken in 2016, this image documents Speicherstadt, a warehouse zone in Hamburg that has been listed as a historic monument since 1991 and as UNESCO world heritage since 2015. The romantic landscapes of Alexander Schönberg are vanitas or memento mori that constantly refer to the emptiness that haunts them.

L'artista

In 2015, after studying music for 15 years, Alexander Schönberg turned to landscape photography following the recommendations of his doctor, who advised him to take walks to relax. One hour later, he held a camera in his hands and captured his first images of Hamburg. Photography rapidly became his principal means of communication with the world around him. Wandering through the streets of the German metropolis, Alexander Schönberg has developed a personal point of view of the city and explores the powerful symbolism of its many bridges. From 2016, he has specialised in black-and-white architectural photography and launched a series on urban melancholy. His work is now internationally acclaimed, garnering many awards at prestigious competitions and notably the Fine Art Photography Awards (FAPA) and the Prix de la Photographie (Px3) in 2017, as well as the Trierenberg Super Circuit and the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA) in 2018.  ... CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
