L'artista

Luis Aguilera was born in Caracas, in Venezuela. As a teenager he moved to Miami to study art at Florida International University. A talented photographer and filmmaker, he has always been intrigued by new tools that make it possible to capture unique moments. Using camera-equipped drones, Luis Aguilera is currently able to fly over the American landscape 200 meters in the air to take photos of the crowded beachfronts of Florida. He is taking full advantage of new technologies – even a few years ago, getting such images would only have been possible from a helicopter or hot air balloon. His advertising work has received a number of awards, notably at the prestigious Cannes Lions festival but also the Epica Awards, Wave Awards, Webby Awards, and the Addy and Mosaic awards given by the American Advertising Foundation.  ... Sull'opera

Unlike Martin Parr, who is interested in documentary photography and captures his subjects in close-up as individuals , and more specifically, as vacationers , Luis Aguilera focuses on depicting the human masses from above and the patterns created by umbrellas, towers and coolers on the blank canvas of the beach. The aerial series Thalassophile that this photograph is from focuses on how miniscule humans are when compared to nature. From 200 meters in the air, the beach-going population resembles an insignificant insect colony compared to the immensity and power of the ocean just beside it. It depicts Two Step beach, also known as Honaunau Bay, considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii thanks to its crystalline deep blue waters and spectacular coral formations.
