L'artista

Born in 1972 in Mexico, Christian Vizl has been passionate about photography since he was 15. Maintaining a deep bond with the ocean and its fauna form his earliest childhood memories, he devoted himself to underwater photography from 2011 onwards. He creates his images in the state of Quintana Roo in southeast Mexico, focusing on the use of ambient lighting to obtain dramatic effects and tonalities that emphasise the form and structure of marine environments. Armed with a diploma in business administration, this talented photographer became a dive instructor in 1997, then a cave diver, rafting, and marine guide. As a member of the CEDAM, a Mexican organisation dedicated to marine archaeology, he has lived in Germany, Mexico, and Australia. Christian Vizl has won numerous awards, notably at the Sony World Photography Awards in 2017. Besides his publications in newspapers worldwide, he is also the in-house photographer of Ocean Geographic magazine and editor-in-chief for Scuba Diver and Asian Diver.  ... Sull'opera

A major environmental activist, Christian Vizl aims to elicit love and empathy for submarine life. Since his beginnings in 2011, he has captured some sublime moments, full of beauty and poetry, which the waters of the world offer. Dedicating his time mainly to this environment, he feels a deep sense of connection but is unfortunately witness to its ever-worsening devastation. Overfishing, pollution, plastics, radiation, climate changes, acidification, and many other human pressures threaten the very essence of the ocean and its species, threatened with extinction. Christian Vizl is persuaded that photography serves humanity and can initiate change. He namely cites American biologist Sylvia Earle: “no blue, no green, if the oceans die, we die too.” The sepia image was taken in 2016 in the tropical waters of the Revillagigedo Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.
