L'artista

Born in 1958 in the port city of Catania, on the east coast of Sicily, Massimo Siragusa started his career with journalism studies before opening a bookshop and gallery dedicated to Italian photographers. In 1989, at the age of 29, he decided to become a photographer after meeting Ferdinando Scianna, a Sicilian international reporter from Magnum. He then moved to Milan and started his collaboration with the Contrasto agency. Now living in Rome, Massimo Siragusa teaches his art practice to the students of the European Institute of Design. His images in a saturated style have been published in international magazines such as New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek, El Pais or Le Figaro . They have been exhibited in Italy and abroad (France, Belgium, and Russia) and have won several honours at the World Press Photo Awards, Sony Awards, and Moscow Foto Awards. Massimo Siragusa has also produced advertising campaigns for the brands Lavazza, Kodak, Moleskine, Bosch, Kartell, and Alfa Romeo, among others.  ... Vedi di più Vedere di meno

I think it's important to pay more attention to the landscape and the changes that people make, whether positive or negative.

MASSIMO SIRAGUSA

Sull'opera

Italy is one of the leading European tourist destinations. Famous for the beauty of its coastline, mountains, architecture, food, and for its painters, it offers incomparable cultural wealth. Yet, if we believe Massimo Siragusa's images, it is in the huge malls or amusement parks that Italian tourists prefer to spend their free time. The photographer denounces these mass vacation sites and consumerist behaviour through the series "Tempo Libro", from which this photograph is derived. Dating from 2010, Fiume Lento was taken in the Gardaland amusement park located in Castelnuovo del Garda in Veneto. The overexposure of the colours and the work on white tones enable Massimo Siragusa to attain half-pastel, half-flashy hues, a muted and almost unreal atmosphere that highlights the artifice of these locations.
