Pourquoi la photographie ?
I started to become interested in photography when I was in high school. I wanted to document the life of the school (I was in a boarding school) and also keep some memories of it. I kept doing that in college and later each time I was going on a vacation. I was just shooting memories and didn’t pay much attention to the style and the light. It’s after moving to New York that I perfected my technique and started to pay attention to what I was shooting. I looked at other photographer’s work in the city and tried to do the same before adopting my own style of photography.
Votre inspiration, artistique notamment ?
I love street photographers from the 40s-50s. Especially because cities were interesting back then. I love Vivian Maier’s work, Willy Ronis and especially Fan Ho. Maybe because he shot in Hong Kong, a city that I love, and he managed to capture its particular light. He is definitely a true master.
Ce qui caractérise votre écriture ?
I don’t think I have a particular style but I definitely love reflections, whether in glasses or puddles, and I love contrasts of light, strong shadows. I have a collection of photos of reflections as well as shadows.
Une particularité en termes de technique ?
I like to shoot street photography, cityscapes but I always try to have a human presence on the photo. I find cityscapes boring if it’s just buildings but once you have a person in it, it tells a story. It’s all about storytelling.
Une anecdote à nous confier ?
When I started getting interesting results shooting reflections in puddles, I would spend some time looking for puddles after a rainy day in the city and if I would find an interesting one (it depends on the size, the location and the position of the sun), I would spend some time by it waiting for something interesting to happen. One time, I noticed a guy pretty well dressed, we could call him a dandy, standing next to a puddle. While I was trying to take a shot, a photographer arrived and asked him to take a photo. I was able to shoot the photographer shooting the guy in the puddle reflection. A year later, I randomly discovered that the photographer was a famous street style photographer, The Sartorialist.
La photo que vous aimeriez avoir prise ?
There are too many. For street photography, I love Vivian Maier’s work, Willy Ronis, and definitely Fan Ho. The light in his pictures is amazing. I love “White windows” notably, shot in Hong Kong in 1962.
