L'artista

Gérard Musy was born in 1959 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He studied Art History at the University of Geneva in the 1980s. The period was characterised by the rediscovery of the body. Fashion, dance, and sexuality were metamorphosised: this was the advent of the “Sexy Eighties”. Gérard Musy was 24 when he became a photographer. This was in 1983 and, armed with his camera, he immersed himself in the nightlife of the big Western metropolises: New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Geneva… Veritable temples of pleasure for the senses, nightclubs became his field of artistic predilection. In 1986, he graduated and moved to New York. He never stopped photographing nightlife, and yet, this shift marked the start of a period largely dedicated to fashion. He innovated by going behind the scenes at fashion shows (Backstage) and also by seeking out natural, unposed moments from his models. Both alternative and renowned international fashion magazines vied for his attention (Pure, Yummy, Exit, SkinTwo, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, etc.). The early 1990s corresponded to a new period: he left the New York life to move to Paris. He then focused on bodies. He broke with codes and made intimacy the central subject of his art. Now, his photographs are shown all over the world and have garnered numerous awards. Published in many books, his artworks also belong to the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Swiss Foundation for Photography in Winterthur, and the Musée de L’Elysée in Lausanne.  ... Gérard Musy is a Swiss photographer renowned for his elegant style in black and white. He thus surprises his audience with the Kaleidoscope series, which is as colourful as it is festive. Carrousels in assorted colours, deck chairs, and beach towels… the artist frames his subjects closely. He then juxtaposes the shots, thus provoking a riot of colour and abstraction. He thus engages in an examination of bright colours and their opposition to the black-and-white style he is best known for.
