MÁS INFORMACIÓN SOBRE ENTREGA

El artista

Photographer Aurélien Villette questions the meaning and patrimonial value of ancient abandoned buildings. While the latter represent an era in architectural history, they also bear witness to the specific history of a country, a region or a civilisation. The remains left in these sites are the chronological markers of an era. Ruins become both objects of contemplation and meditation.  ...

AURELIEN VILLETTE

Sobre la obra

While the photographer's subjects are inspired by buildings in ruins, these are not however always ruins left by their inhabitants. They hark back to the golden age of a bygone era and most symbolise a heritage that is doomed to disappear. Aurélien Villette has travelled the world since 2008 in search of "the spirit of place" in each of the structures that he photographs. But, what is that exactly? He defines it as "an interactive dynamic between material (sites, landscapes, buildings, objects) and immaterial elements (memories, stories, rituals, festivals, expertise), between the physical and the spiritual, which produce meaning." His wanderings lead him to discover sites devoid of any human presence, which have been rejected over time, such as this photograph taken in Italy. "The Bicycle" leaning against a dilapidated wall, always seems to have been there, and invokes the presence or absence of former inhabitants.

PEDRO JARQUE KREBS

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...

THIBAUD POIRIER

Born to expatriate parents, Thibaud Poirier spent his childhood in many cities around the globe, but out of Houston, Montreal, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo, it was the latter that has influenced him the most: “I discovered architecture there, in particular by Tadao Ando, and it became...

ALFREDO SANCHEZ

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...
