De kunstenaar

At the age of just 18, Olivier Föllmi obtained a scholarship to explore Afghanistan. This timeless adventure decided his fate: until 1986, the French/Swiss photographer explored the Himalayas on foot, in love with the mountains and its population. On this occasion, he discovered the Zanskar, a Tibetan valley in India that was to become his adopted home. It was also to become the point of contact with two children of Himalayan farmers whose schooling he would later fund. The photographic report of their shared story won an award at the World Press Photo in 1991. The following year, he founded the association HOPE (Humanity Organisation for People and Education) in service to education worldwide. Olivier Föllmi relates his expeditions in distant lands in illustrated books and, recently, in a film. He is regularly solicited by prestigious media such as National Geographic, Paris Match, Geo, and Life, and his photography has been exhibited all over the world.  ... Lees verder Less minder

OLIVIER FOLLMI

Over het werk

Described as a ?Photographer of humanity,? Föllmi travels to live freely but also to witness the fate of human beings.?To be a travelling photographer, is to be a purveyor of emotions and encounters.?When he first goes to meet the villagers in order to photograph them, it is never with his camera over his shoulder. It is through participative magic tricks that Föllmi enters into contact. Once the relationship is established, the villagers are willing to pose.?The photos become an extension of the magic, of my theatre? With my assistants I often use useless accessories, reflectors, backgrounds, simply to flesh out the decor of my theatre. Everyone wants to take part in the play, on the village stage!?

PEDRO JARQUE KREBS

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...

THIBAUD POIRIER

Born to expatriate parents, Thibaud Poirier spent his childhood in many cities around the globe, but out of Houston, Montreal, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo, it was the latter that has influenced him the most: “I discovered architecture there, in particular by Tadao Ando, and it became...

ALFREDO SANCHEZ

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...
