De kunstenaar

Chinese photographer Fang Tong now lives and works in Vancouver. This multidisciplinary artist moved to Canada in 2001, and studied at the traditional fine arts faculty in Shanghai then the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris. She became progressively interested in photography, her field of predilection, after experimenting with many art forms, including oil painting, design and sculpture. Fang Tong is now a graphic designer for an online gaming company and produces photographic projects alongside her professional activity. Her narrative images, sourcing inspiration from the fashion and film worlds, have earned her many awards. Awarded First Prize at the Nikon Photo Contest in 2015, she also won the Bronze at PX3 (Prix de la Photographie, Paris) in 2014 and was selected in 2013 to promote one of Sony's latest cameras.  ... The imaginary world is strangely familiar while the narrative arc takes the audience on a hyperrealistic journey through the subconscious of people.

FANG TONG

Over het werk

Seeking a subtle balance between the real and the surreal, Fang Tong leads us into the depths of her dreams, into the beginnings of a story that she has written herself. The photographer finds inspiration in the worlds of cinema and fashion. Her works are inventive and particularly well thought-out, scripting models whose absence of expression often reflects their solitude within the setting. While three swimmers do lengths in azure blue waters, it seems hard for the spectator to discern true from false, and to know whether it?s an Olympic pool or the sea stretching along a coastline. The photographs bear similarities to the works of American painter David Hockney or Stephen Shore?s Uncommon Places series, celebrating the everyday life of America in the 1970s.

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...
