Sull'opera

While Massimo Siragusa remains fascinated by the architecture of his native Italy, it is as much for its beauty as for its contradictions. In his view, no photograph can simply document or describe a place, its status as an image obviously includes an element of ambiguity and illusion. This is the dimension that enables him to share such different points of view and ideas. A photograph can therefore have several meanings, while contributing to the construction of the human conscience. Photographed from a sufficiently distanciated perspective, lit by bright and homogenous lighting, the architecture, gardens or public squares captured by the artist acquire a certain monumentality and sense of permanence. This is counterbalanced however by the suggestion of the presence of humans, who make these sites more lively, animated and colourful. A central concern for Siragusa, this almost systematic human presence enables us both to evaluate the scale of these vast spaces and to reveal the relationships that humans maintain with their environment.

L'artista

Born in 1958 in the port city of Catania, on the east coast of Sicily, Massimo Siragusa started his career with journalism studies before opening a bookshop and gallery dedicated to Italian photographers. In 1989, at the age of 29, he decided to become a photographer after meeting Ferdinando Scianna, a Sicilian international reporter from Magnum. He then moved to Milan and started his collaboration with the Contrasto agency. Now living in Rome, Massimo Siragusa teaches his art practice to the students of the European Institute of Design. His images in a saturated style have been published in international magazines such as New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek, El Pais or Le Figaro . They have been exhibited in Italy and abroad (France, Belgium, and Russia) and have won several honours at the World Press Photo Awards, Sony Awards, and Moscow Foto Awards. Massimo Siragusa has also produced advertising campaigns for the brands Lavazza, Kodak, Moleskine, Bosch, Kartell, and Alfa Romeo, among others.  ... Vedi di più Vedere di meno

ALFREDO SANCHEZ

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...

RUSLAN BOLGOV

Ruslan Bolgov was born in 1974 in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. His earliest photographs were taken as a teenager, but he didn’t take the experience very far at the time. It wasn’t until the end of his studies in economics and finance that he seriously app...

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
