Born in 1961 in Brooklyn, Richard Silver lives and works in New York. He began to travel around the world in 2001 when he took up photography. His travels have been a source of inspiration for his art. He is particularly interested in depicting eminently touristic places and symbolic monuments. Since 2002 he has exhibited at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, followed by individual and collective exhibitions mainly in the United States.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

The American photographer transports us into the neighbourhood of Flushing Meadows in New York, famous for hosting the US Tennis Open every year. When Richard Silver isn?t travelling the world, lens in hand ? he has a winning list of 75 countries visited and 220 cities traversed over the course of his career ? he has taken to watching as many big matches as possible with his friends. The picture US Open 2011 was taken during the Women?s Singles quarter final from the top of the grandstand of the USTA National Tennis Center. Once again, the photographer uses the Tilt-Shift technique that gives the illusion of the spectator observing a reduced model. The effects of scale and sharp and fuzzy focus give the impression that he is just a few centimetres from his subject, although macrophotography was not used.
