Denis Olivier

DREAMSPACE RELOADED 51 - PANTHER

About this photograph

A true magician, photographer Denis Olivier has more than one rabbit in his hat. He creates surrealistic compositions in which objects or animals pose playfully among incongruous settings. Influenced by the works of the French photographer Jean-Loup Sief, master of black and white, Denis Olivier appropriates that style, mingling elegance and whimsy. His dreamscapes, marked by a stark, stripped style, conjuring empty, unpeopled landscapes, are painterly. Panther is from the Dreamspace Reloaded series of 2010. The image may seem light as air, yet it is doubly terrifying in its whimsical assemblages, defying all the laws of gravity. His images enthral us like our own childhood reveries, on the frontier of the imaginary.

The Artist
Denis Olivier

It has been since his childhood that Denis Olivier has been plunged into the world of art and photography. A childhood bathed in a red light and marked by the perfume of chemical products. Artists also, his parents make him discover numerous exhibitions that will bring him towards drawing and painting. After a few detours, it is at the Schoolof Fine Arts of Poitiers that he discovers in infographics,in programming and in theimages of synthesis a new and fascinating mode of expression. It is Alain Fleig who will initiate Denis Olivier into art photography but also into technique, notably of the laboratory. Then arrives a first personal exposition and a training internship withPhilippe Salaün¸ Robert Doisneau’s developer. Then again a student, the first commis-sioned works, articles in the press, and expositions fall. In 1995, he begins to work in architecture then in the conception of Internet sites. The apparition of digital photography opens numerous horizons for him in permitting him to work more rapidly and to allow his experiments to run free, without wasting too many resources. Born in 1969 in Royan (France), Denis olivier lives in Bordeaux. It uses digital boitiers Canon, Hasselblad and Holga camera.www.denisolivier.com
