DANCEMASTERAbout this photograph
When we contemplate a photograph by Jared Christopher Martin, we don't know which Saint to pray to, given the considerable profusion of details. Is this a photograph, a painting, a diorama or a freeze frame from a film mid-screening. The American artist borrows the definition of his abstract style from the Cubist movement that revolutionised the notion of representation. He effectively designs a single image based on a multiplicity of small photographs taken on the fly, representing all of our little perceptions, as though time was being compressed, along with the narrative and even memories. The former actor certainly has a lot of memories. The Dancemaster image was taken between 2014 and 2015, as a tribute to his wife, the Chinese-born prima ballerina, Yu Wei.Read more Read less
