Julien Talbot

Since 2011, his start as a digital photographer, Julien Talbot has devoted his artistic practice to urban landscapes. The building in this picture is in Manhattan. These fire escapes are characteristic of New York architecture in the collective imagination, they symbolise the pre-war era as well as classic American films and television series. They derive from an 1840 law requiring the city's building owners to build metal fire escapes on the fronts of their buildings, subsequent to a fire that ravaged more than three hundred houses in Lower Manhattan. Like the German photographers of industrial installations Bernd and Hilla Becher, Julien Talbot shoots his subjects head-on. The use of contrasted, old-fashioned colours also gives a deliberately cinematographic character to his pictures.

The Artist
Julien Talbot

The favoured themes of French photographer Julien Talbot, born in the 1980s, are related to landscape, whether urban, natural or alternative, with a profound fascination for the United States. Although drawn to the visual from his earliest youth, his photographic voyage, as he likes to call it, really began only in 2011, when he acquired his first digital reflex camera. After studying management in the Paris region, he began his professional life in marketing, but simultaneously took evening courses at the école de Photographie EFET, the Mairie de Paris, and Les Gobelins, nourishing his passion for photography. With his new technical skills acquired, he and his camera became inseparable, exploring Paris, Scotland and then New York to capture the essential atmosphere of each environment. His photographs were exhibited in Paris in November 2014.
