De kunstenaar

François Fontaine was born in 1968. He lives and works in Paris. As a history of art student at the Sorbonne, he developed a passion for photography. As the son of a naval officer this practice was closely linked to travel. Thereby he went to South-East Asia, Spain, Brazil, China, Japan and India. Each of these destinations was an opportunity to continue his artistic research from an iconographic point of view as well as stylistic. These series were awarded and François Fontaine was a finalist in the Prix Kodak de la Critique Photographique in 1997, the Prix CCF in 2005 and the Leica Oscar Barnack Prize in 2006.  ... FRANÇOIS FONTAINE

Over het werk

These photographs come from the Beach Boys series created in 2015 by François Fontaine. It's an invitation to a journey through the mythical world of Californian surfers of the 1960s. To the sound of the rock 'n' roll and pop music broadcast on the radio at the time, and which inspired the series title, these surfers, America's golden youth, move like articulated figurines in an explosion of acid-drop colors. Bringing a chromatic "shift" to the scenes shown, the photographer creates pictorial and dreamlike images that "attract and mesmerize with their sensual, nostalgic and universal language." In this still fantasized-about Eldorado, representing California at the height of the American Dream, athletic bodies are airily exposed in gleaming light, while longboards glide across unfurling waves of beauty.

DAMIEN DUFRESNE

As Damien Dufresne says himself: "I let my hands do the talking". His approach is totally new in that it's at the crossroads of makeup, body art, artistic direction and photography. The resulting complexity, technicality and beauty are impressive. Damien Dufresne, a make-up arti...
