Sull'opera

This photograph by Thai artist D-Jai Kosiyabong is part of the ?Identity? series produced in 2014. She wanted to represent the essence of her native culture and particularly dance, which is one of the most elaborate forms of Thai artistic expression. Of Hindu inspiration, the Lakhon, mainly performed by women, is one of the most highly esteemed traditions, which brings popular tales and stories of the life of Buddha to the stage. The image was produced through a long exposure time and multi-flash used at intervals to divide the elegant poses of the dancer. The surrealistic aspect is somewhat reminiscent of Étienne-Jules Marey?s chronophotography, or, in its wake, that of Eadweard Muybridge who used shots taken at short intervals to precisely break down the movement of living beings that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The young woman became interested in photography when she was only 10, and eventually applied herself fully to it two years later. From Bangkok, where she lives, D-Jai observes her native country with fascination, taking a contemporary look at its ancestral traditions with the aid of her digital camera. “Photography has always captivated me, it is a unique way of capturing a moment in time and of seeing the impossible.”  ...
