L'artista

Working under the pseudonym of Aria Baró, Mária ?varbová is a young Slovakian photographer born in 1988. She originally studied the preservation and restoration of artworks, and archaeology, in her native country, before devoting most of her time to photography in 2010. It is this major interest in the fine arts that has given her the freedom to juxtapose a number of aesthetic fields and to devise photographs full of dreamlike and surrealist qualities. The photographer began by producing portraits capturing the expressions of her models, characterised by a sense of endless nostalgia. As for her current work, it satirizes our modern world in the manner of stark paintings in which characters are frozen in inexpressive postures. Mária ?varbová\'s portfolio never fails to fascinate, and she has garnered prestigious collaborations with international fashion or photography publications (Vogue, DOHDO, FotoVideo) and numerous distinctions, including the gold medal for excellence at the Austrian photography fair, the Trierenberg Super Circuit.  ... “I want to make people think. I don’t want to give them the full story, because I love the idea of seduction. They are like excerpts from a film that make you want to see the whole film. You want to know more.”

MARIA SVARBOVA

Sull'opera

The atmosphere that Mária Svarbová depicts through a palette of pastel and overexposed tones projects the spectator into a sanitized world in which the characters has chosen to give up any kind of extravagance that might unmask them. Like inert and robotic figurines, they rigidly evolve from one photograph to the next without parading their feelings. Time seems to have stopped and the swimmers have no other idea than to see themselves reflected in the perfectly still water of the swimming pool. Reworking the concept of the photo novel that originated through a combination of cinema and comic strips, Mária Svarbová's photographs are a successsion of short scenes in which the frontality and absence of contrasts removes any narrative dimension in favour of the fullness of the photographic surface. The use of retouching software allows her to master this careful and stringent aesthetic with extreme precision, attenuating differences as though all individuals were the same, losing all of their individuality and identity.
