The artist

Born in 1971, Nicole Holz works as an independent photographer near Frankfurt, in Germany. As a child, she discovered photography using an old Pentax model. Nonetheless, it wasn't until the digital revolution in 2009 that she became highly interested in the medium. Her artistic work is mainly based on series pertaining to nature, landscapes and whimsical worlds that do not adhere to the traditional rules of photography. Finding inspiration in abstraction, she creates surrealistic compositions that are stagings caught up in movement, but that are both fluid and meditative, leaving spectators immersed in their deepest thoughts. Nicole Holz uses the term visual philosophy. She exhibits her photographs during cultural and artistic events in Germany and recently participated in the international arts fair in São Paulo, Brazil (SP-Arte Latin American Art Fair 2015).  ... Photography never presents an image of our reality, but a momentary subjective abstraction

NICOLE HOLZ

About the artwork

Nicole Holz is interested in forest landscapes and creates dense visual compositions with strong narrative power. Poetic, they are achieved through long exposure effects and slow movements with her camera. Stylised and conceptual, her images render visible what the eye cannot see. For the spectator, they seem full of imagination and inspiration, thus touching our senses and inviting us to meditate on the natural world around us. With this composition from 2017, Nicole Holz breaks down the notions of movement, speed, and vibration. The surrealistic aspect is somewhat reminiscent of Étienne-Jules Marey’s chronophotography, or, in its wake, that of Eadweard Muybridge who used shots taken at short intervals to precisely break down the movement of things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. By freezing time, these artists all render the invisible visible.
