About the artwork

Full Metal Jacket hit cinema screens in 1987. The photograph Unfit is from the first part of film dedicated to the training of Marine recruits before being dispatched to Vietnam. It depicts Sergent Hartman, in charge of the training of the Marines, and the recruit Leonard Lawrence nicknamed Gomer Pyle. Leonard, of limited intelligence, turns out to be unfit to receive training. Harassed by Hartman, scapegoat for the entire company, he ends up by killing his torturer before shooting himself. Stanley Kubrick?s craving for perfectionism is demonstrated as far as the distribution of the roles. The actor who portrays the instructor really was a Marine sergeant. At the start, he is technical advisor for the film and in charge of casting the actors to play the recruits. After having viewed the film of these auditions, Kubrick immediately gives him the role of the sergeant. Stanley Kubrick :In 1945, at the age of 16, Stanley Kubrick began his career as photographer for the renowned magazine Look. There he learnt the tricks of the trade: image composition: lighting and the art of capturing movement. In parallel, he was a regular cinema goer and decided, with his experience as a photographer behind him, to become a self-taught film director. Over his 50 year career, Stanley Kubrick directed 13 feature length films. The director?s incomparable perfectionism, which he took as far as to film the same scene 100 times, explains this short filmography. Out of these 13 films, many are considered major works of art having left a lasting impression on the public and inspired many artists, regardless of their discipline. Kubrick?s photographic debut was influential throughout his career as a director and he doubtlessly films with the eye of a photographer. The 67th Mostra de Venise payed tribute to the photographer Kubrick, exhibiting photographs from the 12,000 negatives to his credit.
