The artist

Jajgit Singh lives and works in Chandigarh, in northwest India, not far from the Shivalik mountains in the Outer Himalayas. When he decided to teach himself photography, it was primarily in order to explore and highlight the natural and cultural heritage of this region, with its wealth of temples, lakes and prestigious gardens. He thus creates a panorama of the enchanted sites conserved there and its inhabitants, who sometimes gather for traditional festivals as extraordinary as the “Holi”, a festival that is famous throughout the world for its incredible colours and legends: “Festivals are an integral part of the lives of Indians, they illustrate the wealth of the country’s cultural heritage. I like to express the importance of these Indian festivals and their meaning.” With sincerity and emotion, he is able to render intense moments of life visual, moments that are always in harmony with their environment. Through his photographs, Jajgit Singh truly enchants the spectator. The beauty of such spectacles and shared moments are like so many invitations for us to travel...  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Located in northern India, the region of Braj Bhoomi represents the land of eternal love for the country?s population. This love is symbolised by the union of Krishna, the most venerated divinity in India, and his admirer Radha Rani. The latter often allowed herself to be seduced in the course of their favourite pastime, the ?Holi?, during which they threw coloured pigments at one another. A one-of-a-kind temple has since been erected in honour of Radha Rani in the city of Barsana. It is now one of the key areas to celebrate the ?Holi? festival, where thousands of followers from the four corners of India assemble each spring to perpetuate this ancestral tradition by covering themselves in bright colours. Fascinated by the beauty of this spectacle and the majesty of the landscape where it takes place, Jagjit Singh reveals to us the intensity of this unusual ceremony.
