The artist

Milton Greene is one of the most famous American photographers. Born in 1922 in New York, he discovered photography at the age of 15 and decided to devote himself entirely to it. Rather than attend university, he chose to become an apprentice at the fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar . He learned fast and rose up the ranks: by the age of thirty, he was a fashion photographer for Vogue , Vanity Fair , Esquire , and Look . It was on a shoot for the latter that Milton Greene met Marilyn Monroe. From then on, he became her friend, her official photographer, and then her associate. His photos of Marilyn are world famous and the one representing her in a tutu were referred to by Time Life as one of the three most famous photos of the twentieth century. While all of the stars of the 1960s and ‘70s passed before his lens, the art of Milton Green went well beyond the simple glamour photo on glazed paper, he knew how to stage his subject to lead them to discover a part of their personality. It was this talent that earned him his recognition today as one of the photographers who transformed celebrity photography into an art form.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Before becoming the unrivalled photographer to the stars, Milton Greene had long been a fashion photographer. This photo presents his models in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The staging is iconoclastic for the period, to say the least, and a good illustration of the way in which the American photographer broke the codes. The models seem a bit lost and slightly uneasy on this little boat, not really suitable for a fashion shoot!
