The artist

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy dazzles us with his high-quality images of the moon and planets captured from his garden in Sacramento, California. His meticulous attention to details and patience allow him to reveal the slightest subtleties of the surface of the celestial bodies that surround us. Although his interest in the cosmos began by his father’s side, when he was just a teenager, he became interested in lunar photography in 2017 with the acquisition of his first telescope. His most distant memory is the discovery of Saturn, a fascinating point of view that has endlessly fueled his dream of exploring the heavens. Should the occasion arise, the American photographer would like to be the first man to take images of Earth from the moon’s surface. Perhaps the distances that separate us from the moon will be lessened and his wish will some day come true?  ... See more See less

About the artwork

At a time of spatial conquest with spacecraft sent into space or telescopes fitted with cameras, whose mysterious and spectacular images regularly make the front pages of the media, it may seem surprising to undertake astrophotographic work. Midway between art and science, Andrew McCarthy’s photography practice allow the stars to be studied with exceptional technological refinement, phenomenal resolutions and sensitivity levels. This image represents the total lunar eclipse that occured when the moon entered its perigee in January 2019, the closest point to the Earth. Nicknamed “Super Blood Wolf Moon”, it was a moment when the natural terrestrial satellite glided into the shadow of the blue planet and took on a beautiful blood-red colour.
