The artist

Akila Berjaoui is a photographer born in the coastal city of Tweed Heads in northern Australia. Given her double culture, she conserves her paternal roots in Beirut, Lebanon, and remains captivated by the Australian beaches that she visited as a child on long holidays in her maternal family. Now living in Sydney where she attended university, Akila Berjaoui first worked as an intern for the fashion magazine Russh before pursuing her career as a fashion designer. The starting point of her photographic career arose a bit later, when she was called in to replace an absent photographer at short notice for a fashion shoot. The shots taken with her Polaroid that day were to seal her artistic fate. Ever since, she has travelled all over the world producing sensual images by continually referring to the touristic atmospheres of the 1970s in the work of Slim Aarons, to the faces of Claude Nori?s young women, or Bruce Weber?s black-and-white portraits.  ... About the artwork

As the fruit of an aesthetic combining dilettantism and a natural flair for geometry, Akila Berjaoui?s images tell little stories with seaside connotations, which the models embody with great sensuality. In colour or in black and white, the photographer pursues her artistic quest with continual reference to women, to the ?50s, ?60s and ?70s and to the famous actresses of those eras. She affirms her lineage with the work of Slim Aarons, in which these same personalities flaunt themselves brazenly against an azure blue ? that of infinity pools and waves breaking on the shores of the Pacific. Seeking to capture the essence of the young woman who poses naturally before her lens, Alexandra was taken in 2010 near the heavenly Bondi Beach in Australia.

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...

PEDRO JARQUE KREBS

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...
