Collaborating for over 30 years for Condé Nast publications, he found his place within Vogue and Glamour, which succumbed to his images and made him their fetish photographer, with over 200 magazine covers to his name. He began his career as a window dresser before becoming Horst P. Horst’s assistant, then Cecil Beaton’s, before flying solo in 1936 and creating his own studio. He is a master of staging and sophisticated, feminine portraits – as this surrealistic image of a young woman applying lipstick through a wall attests.
